Explorer Rethymno: Rimondi Fountain - Venetian Jewel of the Old Town

Explorer Rethymno: The Historic Rimondi Fountain ⛲

The **Rimondi Fountain** is one of the most distinctive, recognizable, and historical monuments in Rethymno's Old Town. Located in the square of the same name, it was constructed in the **17th century (circa 1626)** by the Venetian Governor **Alvise Rimondi**.

For centuries, the Rimondi Fountain was the **main water source** for the city's inhabitants, serving as a vital meeting point and centre for daily activity. Today, it remains a living reference point and an architectural jewel.

✨ Architecture & Historical Significance

The Rimondi Fountain is an exceptional example of **Venetian architecture** with Renaissance influences. Its main characteristics are:

  • **The Three Spouts:** The most characteristic element is the **three lion heads** from which cool water flows. The lion heads reference the Lion of St. Mark, a symbol of Venice, lending it an imposing presence.
  • **The Columns:** The fountain features **four columns** with Corinthian capitals, which support an entablature with a Latin inscription.
  • **The Roof:** Originally, the monument was covered by a vaulted dome, which protected the water and its three reservoirs.

It constitutes a living piece of history that testifies to the period of Venetian rule in Crete.

📸 The Fountain Today

The Rimondi Fountain and the square where it sits are located in the heart of the Old Town and are a **must-see** spot for every visitor. Surrounded by picturesque cafes and tavernas, the area is ideal for:

  • **Photography:** It makes an excellent subject for photos, especially at sunset or when the lighting highlights the carved lion heads.
  • **Rest:** You can sit at one of the surrounding cafes and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the square.

Don't forget to stop and admire the harmony of the Fountain and take a sip of its running water, continuing a centuries-old tradition.
